Let k be a perfect field of characteristic p>0. In these lectures, we will explain some results on the cohomology of algebraic varieties over k with coefficients in Serre's sheaf of Witt vectors, and their applications to congruence mod q of the number of k-rational points on such varieties when k is finite with q elements.
