The physical phenomenon of return to equilibrium has been analyzed by several mathematicians like Desvillettes, Helffer, Herau, Nier, Villani, ... for the Kramers-Fokker-Planck equation with a coercive potential. In this talk, we present a scattering method to study the large-time asymptotics of solutions in the short-range case and show that the space distribution of particles is still governed by the Maxwillian, but the density decays in time with the same rate as in heat transfer. |
